The Typewriter Underground at Henry Miller Memorial Library, June 15

Date: June 15, 2018

Time: 7:30 pm

The Typewriter Underground, a multimedia presentation of poetry fragments from Marc Zegans’ upcoming poetry collection of the same name.

Poetry fragments will be read, in character, by local actors Jess Juarez and Monique Rose, and back-dropped by experimental short films. Live exploratory percussive jazz music by local musicians, River Navaille, Jeddy Grant, and Trevor Luciere will soundtrack the readings and films.

The filmmakers hail from all over the country:

Eric Edelman is a New York based digital collage artist working in both still and animated formats.  His collage has beenfeatured in the New York Review of Books.

Ellen Hemphill and Jim Haverkamp are a film making team, Ellen the director and Jim director of photography.  Both hold appointments at Duke University Ellen as professor in the practice of theater, and Jim as lecturing fellow in the moving arts. They also lead the Archipelago Theater company.

Aaron Shadwell is a New England based recording artist and film maker.

Jackie Todd is a Chicago based film maker. She works widely in the industry and is best known for her documentary film Diary of a Cyborg.

Jenn Vee is an Oakland based visual poet who regularly brings poetry to life on video. Our first collaboration was on a film, Broken Lines, that she made from a poem of the same title which appeared in an earlier collection by Marc Zegans, entitled Underwater Typewriter.

In between the readings, two dance performance troupes, The Hip-Nautic Flowers (led by Carri Newhouse), and The Carmel Delights (led by Callie Lynn) will enact an elaborate game of cat and mouse to recorded jazz music from such greats as Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, Osvaldo Pugliese, Django Reinhardt, and others. The dancers will utilize the audience area, so guests are encouraged to dress in costume.

Food will be sold and served by Bacchanalia Catering.
